Just like many of the things that we discovered in our house, the deck needed to be replaced. There were board rotting and it seemed unstable. Once we took it apart, we discovered why. It seems that they never put footers in when they built it, so while the deck aged, it became very unstable. We decided to use a treated wood that instead of the green look, it has a red/cedar look. We were hoping it would keep the color over time and so far it has. We kept the same design as it was because we liked the idea of having a bench all the way around it. The only big thing that we did was change where the door opening was. Nick and Ralph did the work, but they had a few good helpers too.
